This section was added to the "small business
tool kit" in August 2007. Additional questions will be added as time
passes.
Question:
What is a "DBA"?
Answer: "DBA" is an acronym for the term
"doing business as". If you organize your business as a sole
proprietorship or partnership and will be doing business using a name other than
your own you must file a Business Registration Certificate (name of the form
used in Osceola County) with the County Clerk. The Business Registration
Certificate is often referred to as a "DBA. If you have questions
concerning this topic you should contact either the County Clerk's office at
832-3261 or the Osceola Economic Alliance at 832-7397.
Question:
Are there grants available for starting a business?
Answer: This is one of the most asked
questions; however, with very few exceptions grants are not available for
starting a business. A short paper titled
Demystifying Small Business Grants will provide a further explanation.
Question:
I realize that choosing a name for my business is
very important and I have several questions. Is there some place I can
find information on choosing a business name?
Answer:
The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth,
Bureau of Commercial Services has published an excellent guide titled,
Choosing A
Business Name.
Question:
I understand a business can be organized in
different ways, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Where can
I find information on this topic?
Answer:
Information concerning the different types of
business entities can be found through a number of sources. Two online
sources include the comprehensive
Entrepreneur's Guide published by the Michigan Department of Labor &
Economic Growth, Bureau of Commercial Services and there is a section in
the 2007 Starting A Small Business Guide published by the Michigan Small
Business & Technology Development Center.
